About Mind Blank

Mind Blank is a not-for-profit organisation that generates awareness and innovative education of mental health topics in youth across Australia.

What to know more? Check out our latest Annual Report Mind-Blank-Annual-Report-2015-16.pdf

Why Mental Health?

Mental illness is thought to be an underlying factor in about 90% of all youth suicides, which is the leading cause of youth death in Australia. The Australian Bureau of Statistics stated between 2004-2006 there was an average of 266 deaths per year attributed to suicide among people aged 15-24 years, accounting for 20% of deaths in this age group. One of the defining factors for better mental health outcomes for youth is to encourage them to seek help early. The stigma of mental illness held by young people and a lack of awareness can both be barriers to early intervention. Our communities need to look at taking a different approach when educating and engaging young people around topics of youth mental health. We need to take responsibility and educate ourselves and our young people to be more aware of mental health issues, seek help early and continue to reduce the numbers of young people that die by suicide! Mind Blank helps produce a more creative outlet as a solution to this problem.

19 Apr 2017 Mind Blank Membership Alert: John McGowan

    Meet John McGowan:

John McGowan is a freelance digital marketing performance analyst, and provides consultation to medium to large enterprises in paid search and web analytics. He brings with him over 4 years experience in the digital marketing industry specialising in Paid Search, Web Analytics and Tag Management, with further experience in CRO, SEO, Video Marketing, Programmatic Display, Bid Management Platforms, User Experience and Customer Experience. He has worked both agency-side across hundreds of digital marketing campaigns, and client-side managing both internal and external teams, while being solely responsible for annual digital marketing budgets in excess of 19 million Australian dollars. He has worked for well known companies like BP, Kellogg's, Honda, Chanel, Dyson, Flight Centre Travel Group and Daydream Island.

John spends his time overseeing multi-channel performance optimisation for various multinationals across the oil and gas, technology, motor, food processing, finance, cosmetics and fashion industries. In his own time he also provides pro-bono work for scientific crowdfunding and non-profit organisations.

"We are lucky to work with someone like John! The marketing world is forever evolving into the digital space and many businesses are suffering to keep up with it.

I first meet John when our team were struggling to get the best use out of our Google Addwords Account. This isn't a set up once and leave it to run process. It requires constant work monitoring updates and reporting exposure outcomes.

His contributions to the team have prompted us to set up review tools such as Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager to help us keep track of our work progress.

John is very patient to work with. He is understanding and considerate and he always strives his best to get the most satisfying results for his clients!

In am honestly in saying that the type of data analysis that John is able to interpret, goes way above a lot of our teams heads. Despite this he is able to humanise the terminology in his reports to make sure that they are an easy read to those who may not have extensive knowledge in digital media.

The Mind Blank team Welcomes Johns efforts with open arms, as we are excited to see what progress can be implemented with his kind and generous ongoing support".

    Mind Blank Membership Alert: Bentley's

12 Apr 2017 Mind Blank Membership Alert: Bentley's

This month Mind Blank would like to acknowledge Bentleys as our newest Mind Blank Member.

Bentleys are an international network of business advisors and professionals that provide accounting services, audit and assurance, business advisory, cloud solutionscorporate recovery, financial planning, superannuation advice, trusts and estates planning, and taxation consulting. (source: bentleys.com.au)

This blog is a gesture of appreciation to Karen Gambles and her team.

“Our relationship with Bentleys is a new one and conversations of support commenced early in 2016. Our operations team were touched by the generous support that Karen offered to contribute to Mind Blank.

Karen has shared with us that Bentleys is a compassionate brand who share true values of social corporate responsibility. As an in-kind gesture Bentleys helped us to prepare our financials for the 2015-2016 financial year. Thank you Bentleys for making this year’s processes run so smoothly!

For many businesses preparing for an AGM can be quite a daunting task,. especially for small micro businesses like us! There are some years that I can recall feeling the stress that has come from organising AGM’s for the Mind Blank team. The stress has mainly come from the unknown question…. Will our financial statements be ready in time?

For those unfamiliar with the process, let me fill you in with what it’s like for most businesses.:

Step one:  Internal run around to make sure all loose ends are tied, all receipts are in, any last minute payments are made and all the accounts are organised in a presentable fashion for an accountant to look over.

Step two: Usually what happens is our team approach a financial firm no later than a month in advance.  We ask them if they feel they can achieve the target of having the accounts ready by our AGM date.

Step three: Our team then gets information requested from the accountants. This is usually nothing out of the ordinary, with requests such as providing bank statements etc. Sometimes if our processes aren’t 100% organised, we have to do some digging to come up with what is being requested.

Step four: We wait. Our team has run around, we have done our bit, the only thing left to do is wait.

Step five: We are requested to fix up a few things because there are a few minor errors on the records. Let’s face it! Most businesses would be lucky to get through this phase without having some minor errors to fix.

Step Six: The chase. In 6 years of hosting Mind Blank AGM’s I cannot remember one time (apart from this year) where I didn’t end up having to chase and follow up to see if we were going to meet our initial AGM deadline date. Boy has it made me nervous when I do not get communication to confirm that the initial timeframe is all good. There have been times where it has come close, too close. There are times where I’ve thought, geese, if our team hadn’t chased up then we might have had to postpone our original date (changing the date is a massive, messy and time consuming inconvenience for our team).

All I can say is thank goodness for Bentleys! The accountant that I work with from Bentleys this year was Maryanne Richey. Maryanne was professional, on the ball and got all our accounts ready with plenty of time given to send out the financial statements prior to our meeting.

If you are looking for a reliable accounting firm, then go no further. Bentleys are a great team to stand alongside. I could not recommend their services more.

04 Apr 2017 Mind Blank Membership Alert: eCareers Academy

Brian is a follower of Mind Blank from our initial pilot days. His personal values align with Mind Blank's. His like-minded contributions to society bring his passions to light, and with eCareers Academy he puts young people first!

We recommend eCareers Academy as your first choice when seeking advice on career change, job search skills, career planning, education and training options, skill development, effective CV writing or job interview tips.

Prior to his final High School exams (the Higher School Certificate), one of Brian’s 18 year old clients went from studying 30 minutes per night to over 3 hours per night. Why? After experiencing the eCareers Academy career profiling process, the young man received career clarity for the first time in his life. His attitude to study was more focussed and his High School grades improved dramatically; granting him Early Entry into a world-renowned University.

Career clarity can impact everyone’s vocational journey. Do you know any young people in need of coaching or careers mentoring advice? If so, the following information could certainly help them:

Career clarity … when do you need it?

Answer - Usually when you’re in a career transition phase, for example:
    • Between Year 10 and Year 11 (re: Elective choices)
    • Between Year 12 and your post-High School options (University, TAFE, a job, a Gap Year)
    • Post- High School blues (i.e., “Have I made the right choice?”)
    • Returning to the workforce after a break
    • Optional or forced job/career changes

Career clarity … how do you find it?

Locate a professional, experienced and skilled Careers Consultant, who can offer individual career services:

    • One-on-one career counselling sessions
    • Online Career Assessments, which include analysing your:
    • Education level; personal interests; occupational interests; physical capabilities; innate skills; factors affecting job satisfaction; and personality

Some of our testimonials

As a psychologist with over 15 years’ experience working with vulnerable youth populations, it is my opinion that the Mind Blank theatre forum topics have the potential to open up informed discussions around youth mental health issues in a way that is meaningful, engaging and real for the young people involved, and these are vital ingredients for working effectively with young people.

Tim Hudman

Youth Mental Health Psychologist

I was introduced to Mind Blank via a performance at Wollongong University. They performed to a student group of about 300 high school students. You could hear a pin drop- they had everyone’s attention, (including my own) in the palm of their hands. It truly was the highlight of the action packed day. In my 13 years as a PDHPE teacher, I have never seen mental health be brought the forefront with such enjoyment, fun and interaction. Their ability to engage students into this taboo topic is brilliant and the ability to keep the conversation going-that is the successful component of Mindblank. I can’t recommend this enough. Students will love it, teachers will appreciate the unique approach it takes to mental health and everyone will benefit from this much needed creative production.

Lake Illawarra Careers Advisor

I thank you for inspiring to face the demons of my past… I consider myself to be a survivor of the battlefield of depression and victor, I look back on things passed and realize I have changed for the better and have come so far and syllable have a long way to go…. Thank you… I’m truly truly grateful to have witnessed Mind Blank at our school”

Young Person

Raising the awareness of positive life decisions when faced with mental health issues. This has been achieved by not lecturing but allowing students to make these powerful decisions themselves through interactive theatre arming them with the skills and knowledge to know when to seek help.

I quote from Warrawong High school principal Jenny Flowers “It was great! Some of our most challenging year 12 students stopped me in the playground and thanked me for bringing Mind Bank to the school, we all learned so much.

Cathy McGhie

Team Leader Student Employment Advisor (Workplace Learning Illawarra)

Tackling youth mental health issues in our community is an ever increasing concern among parents, teachers, and the broader community, largely due to rising rates of bullying, depression, youth suicide and the growing demand on support services such as Headspace.

As a former PDHPE teacher, I understand the critical importance of education to the understanding and addressing of mental health issues in young people, as well as how difficult this can be.

Mind Blank’s programs give young people an in-depth understanding of not only symptoms of mental health issues, but also strategies to positively seek help and prevent harm.  As teachers working closely with students on these issues, I would like to take this opportunity to endorse Mind Blanks work and I encourage you to come along and see how the Scuba Initiative may benefit your students.
